Agro Indomas Making Strides in Conservation Efforts
Jakarta. Central Kalimantan-based palm oil producer Agro Indomas, a subsidiary of Goodhope Asia Holdings, recently held a conference to discuss conservation efforts in the industry with stakeholders.
The company believes sustainability in agribusiness starts from empowering stakeholders and helping them establish their own roles in conserving nature.
"The company is committed to adhering to the mandate of the NDPE policy. There will be no deforestation, peat and exploitation," Agro Indomas sustainability director Edi Suhardi said in a press release on Tuesday (04/09), referring the company's "no deforestation, no peat, no exploitation" policy.
The company's sustainability commitments were made public in a series of consultations with stakeholders, including government authorities, nongovernmental organizations, the media, buyers, suppliers and contractors.
The first presentation was by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry on peatland fire control. The second involved a representative of Agro Indomas discussing the company's approach to implementation of the NDPE policy.
The event was attended by heads of subdistricts and the representatives of law enforcement bodies and business partners, including representatives of Golden Agri Resources, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and Orangutan Foundation International.
Agro Indomas is currently working with the Earth Innovation Institute (Inobu) to implement a system to monitor the legality of smallholder-suppliers. The system will provide information to both the company and local governments.
CheckMark Training and Goodhope Asia Holdings have also conducted their first collaboration, attended by plantation and certification companies, on the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), principles and criteria, supply chain certification and lead auditor certification training.
The company said these discussions will help Agro Indomas review recommendations and contributions from stakeholders and find the best way to implement policies that will benefit all parties.
