Contemporary Artist Suklu Presents Workshops at Bali's Komaneka Gallery
Jakarta. Contemporary artist I Wayan Sujana, better known as "Suklu," is holding a series of art workshops at the Komaneka Fine Arts Gallery in Ubud, Bali, between Sept. 26 and Oct. 9.
Suklu, whose nickname is a contraction of his name Sujana and his birthplace Klungkung, is famous for depicting the complex relationship between men and women in his work.
Running both on weekdays and weekends, participants can get lessons directly from the multi-talented artist on drawing, painting and sculpting.
The workshops are open to all visitors to the gallery, enabling aspiring artists and art enthusiasts to learn about art for free. However, advance booking is required because space is limited.
The gallery will provide all the materials and participants are allowed to take their own artworks home. Besides that, each participant will also receive a certificate from Suklu, who is chairman of the Batu Belah Art Space.
Some workshops are titled "Drawing on Novels," which involve spontaneous drawings based on pages from literary works as a medium to stimulate artists' imagination and provide creative therapy.
Another workshop titled "Repetition of Line, Color and Texture," applies a mathematical formula to determine a painting's structure. Get your hands dirty with wood powder, glue and acrylic paint in this workshop.
You can also capture grace, strength and flexibility during the "Strong and Flexi: Bamboo Sculpture" workshop, where participants can free their imagination using bamboo.
The workshops coincide with Suklu's solo art exhibition also taking place at the Komaneka gallery from Sept. 9 to Oct. 9. The solo exhibition is the second in the "Coming Home" series, showcasing the works of local artists who initially started their careers at the gallery.
