Natural Gas Fuels Asian Games Torch
Jakarta. National Gas Company, or PGN, is in charge of keeping the Asian Games alight with a stream of natural gas for the duration of the event.
The largest natural gas distributor in Indonesia made sure everything was ready before the opening ceremony that was attended by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Friday (18/08).
PGN company secretary Rachmat Hutama said that the Indonesia Asian Games Organizing Committee (Inasgoc) has appointed PGN to supply a steady stream of gas to the main cauldron inside the stadium and to the cauldron outside the stadium for the event.
"The fire cannot go out under any circumstances. It represents the fighting spirit of the athletes competing in the Games. It's important for us to follow the requests of the committee," said Rachmat in a statement on Sunday.
Compressed natural gas (CNG) prepared for the event is supplied by PGN's subsidiary Gagas Energy Indonesia.
It was provided in a gas transport module (GTM), six meters in length and three meters in height. Four modules were prepared for the event.
"Gagas Energy has made sure the fire in the red cauldron will stay alight and prepared a team to monitor the fire around the clock. We've also prepared the team to handle a variety of weather conditions to keep the fire lit accordingly," Rachmat said.
The total amount of gas required keep the cauldron lit is 40,000 cubic meters, 14,000 cubic meters for the main cauldron and 26,000 cubic meters for the cauldron outside.
