Jakarta. Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper, or RAPP, a pulp and paper producer based in Pangkalan Kerinci, Riau, celebrated the fourth anniversary of its Fire-Free Village Program on July 26.

The event was attended by Riau Deputy Governor Wan Thamrin Hasyim and RAPP president director Sihol Aritonang.

The Fire-Free Village Program has been a breakthrough in the prevention of forest fires by involving communities living in the company's concession areas.

"Since its inception in 2014, and by working together with all stakeholders, the FFVP [Fire-Free Village Program] has managed to spread awareness. To support the government's efforts, the FFVP has suppressed fire breakouts in Riau and it is also part of a commitment to help the 2018 Asian Games become a success," Sihol said.

The company has been working closely with village heads to provide farming tools and know-how for sustainable land-clearing methods.

The program kicked off with four villages, which have increased to 27 villages in three districts currently.

Areas affected by fire have decreased from 0.18 percent to 0.03 percent since the program's inception.

Deputy Governor Wan voiced his appreciation of the company's efforts and expressed hope that the program will inspire others to adopt similar measures.
