Arifin Putra Says the Second Season of 'Halfworlds' is Motivated by Hope
Jakarta. Star of "The Raid 2: Berandal" Arifin Putra said he is happy to return to the second season of HBO Asia original series "Halfworlds" and reprise his role as Halfbreed Barata, adding that the new installment brings new changes to the audience.
Speaking at a media gathering in South Jakarta on Thursday (12/01), Arifin said the second season takes place in Bangkok, Thailand, and will feature Peesaj, the Thai word for demon.
"The world itself is still the same, it's still dark and gloomy, but in season one, most of the characters were motivated by fear of something bad happening, everyone was running away from something. In season two, all of them are motivated by hope. So they hope for something better for their families and themselves," he said.
Arifin plays as Barata, a Halfbreed — a rare occurrence of half-human, half-demon and considered abominations by Peesaj. The 29-year old actor said his character has changed for reasons that will become known as the second season unveils.
"In season one, Barata is more stoic and coldblooded and in season two, you see a lighter side of him, you see him making friends and sarcastic jokes," he said. "He is motivated by hope in finding a better place for himself and people he cares for."
Thai filmmaker Ekachai Uekrongtham replaced Indonesian director Joko Anwar in the second season as the show took a different direction.
"I'm sad I did not get to work with Joko again in this project, but working with Ekachai is a new experience and as an actor, I always like to find new experiences. They have very different styles, Joko likes things to be very dark, and Ekachai brings a different nuance and tone to 'Halfworlds,' but it's interesting that the universe of the show stays the same."
The second season of "Halfworlds" premieres Sunday, Jan. 22 at 8 p.m. on HBO Asia.
