Pixar Looks to Indonesia for Potential Animated Feature Film
Jakarta. Pixar, one of the world's most prominent animation studios, has expressed interest in developing an animated feature film based on Indonesian folklore, the head of the National Creative Economy Agency said upon returning from the United States last week.
Agency chief Triawan Munaf recently visited the headquarters of Pixar Animation Studios and met with John Lasseter, the chief creative officer of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios.
"In our one-hour discussion, he told us a lot about the creative world. At the end of our meeting, interestingly, he asked us to introduce him to Indonesian fairy tales that [Pixar] might turn into an animation," Triawan said.
He added the agency would undergo a curation process to pick some of the country's fairy tales and folklore to be introduced to Pixar.
"They're focused on having a good story, not [necessarily one with] a moral message. A good story inevitably has moral value," Triawan added.
There is still no official arrangement on this collaboration between Pixar and the government, but Triawan said he hoped Indonesian animators could be involved in the animation-making process if the project were to materialize.
"[Pixar] usually spends at least four years in making an animation film, so we have to be patient," he said.
