AQUA Leads the Way: BPJPH Lauds Biggest Bottled Water Company’s Commitment to MSME Halal Certification

Jakarta. In a significant boost for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across Indonesia, the Indonesian Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) has commended renowned bottled water brand AQUA for its exemplary support in promoting halal certification for local businesses.
During a visit to AQUA’s Mekarsari plant last Thursday, BPJPH head Haikal Hassan emphasized the need for other companies to follow AQUA's initiative to ensure that more MSMEs obtain halal certification. "AQUA sets an excellent example. We encourage other businesses to support halal certification to help elevate the quality of Indonesian products," he stated.
Current BPJPH statistics reveal that a mere 2.1 million of Indonesia's 66 million businesses are halal-certified, a stark contrast given that Indonesia is the largest Muslim-majority nation globally. The nation ranks eighth in the world for halal-certified products, lagging behind countries such as France, South Korea, Brazil, Russia, and the leading nation, China. In light of these figures, Haikal urged businesses of all sizes to pursue halal certification, enhancing their competitiveness in the global market and contributing to the government's target of achieving 8 percent economic growth, as highlighted by President Prabowo Subianto.
Haikal noted the financial challenges associated with halal certification but pointed out that various programs aim to alleviate these costs, including regional assistance initiatives wherein the private sector can act as an intermediary.
“It’s critical that every business explores these opportunities,” he indicated.
AQUA’s engagement with halal certification goes beyond merely fulfilling regulatory requirements. According to the company, halal certification serves to ensure consumer comfort and legal assurance. “Our dedication to halal goes beyond our production facilities; we are actively collaborating with our Danone partners nationwide,” said Vera Galuh Sugijanto, VP General Secretary at Danone Indonesia. “We are working alongside BPJPH, the food control agency BPOM, and various Muslim organizations to facilitate MSME certification,” she added.
With over 50 years of experience supplying healthy hydration to Indonesians, AQUA is not only focused on its business growth but also on contributing to health, environmental protection, and community well-being. The company aims to foster support for local halal communities near its operation sites.
Vera concluded, “AQUA recognizes that we cannot grow alone. We are committed to partnering with civil society organizations, including Islamic groups like Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah, and the Indonesian Mosque Council. Through these collaborations, we strive to enhance our business while benefiting our consumers and partners.”
This initiative by AQUA exemplifies corporate responsibility and bolsters Indonesia's reputation as a leader in the halal market, encouraging a more inclusive and prosperous economic landscape for all.
