Jakarta. State-owned bank BNI recently reaffirmed its commitment to funding Indonesia’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as part of its strategy to implement environmental, social, and governance principles.

BNI Risk Management Director David Pirzada said that accessible financing was crucial to the MSMEs, which played a huge role in the economy. Easy access to capital lets MSMEs develop their businesses, increase production capacity, and create new jobs.

"MSME empowerment also contributes to economic diversification and increased competitiveness, which will ultimately strengthen overall economic stability," David said.

Until the end of September 2024, BNI had consistently distributed credit to the MSME segment. The bank has distributed Rp 77.3 trillion in credits to the MSMEs. About Rp 36.6 trillion was micro loan (KUR) funding. About Rp 40.7 trillion others were non-KUR.

"This reflects BNI's strong commitment to supporting economic growth through the MSME sector which is the backbone of the national economy," said David.

BNI's involvement in empowering MSMEs also reflects the company's broader social responsibility. By establishing strategic partnerships with various government institutions and non-governmental organizations, BNI seeks to create an ecosystem that supports MSME growth.

According to David, BNI not only provides easier financial access for MSME players but is also committed to providing assistance and training so that they can develop their businesses sustainably. To this end, the bank has launched initiatives such as Jejak Kopi Khatulistiwa, BNI UMKM Ramah Lingkungan, Kampung Budidaya Perikanan as well as Expora. These programs help MSMEs adopt environmentally friendly business practices while increasing their competitiveness in the global market.

BNI reported that its sustainability portfolio had reached Rp 188 trillion. This is equivalent to 26 percent of BNI's total credit as of September 2024.

"Through these various initiatives, BNI plays an active role in advancing the local economy while preserving the environment and improving the quality of life of the community," David said.
