Jakarta. FMCG giant Danone Indonesia is on business magazine Fortune Indonesia's list of 30 companies who are taking home the 2023 Change The World awards.

According to a press statement, the award recognizes companies that bring a positive impact to the people, employees, and environment. Danone Indonesia won the award for its sustainable environment management efforts.

“We believe that business sustainability must also be in line with the sustainability of its surrounding ecosystem. We are always committed to improving public health by providing quality nutrition and water, including safeguarding the planet, while also boosting the prosperity of our employees and the community living near our operations," Danone Indonesia corporate communications director Arif Mujahidin said.

According to Arif, Danone Indonesia is planting 2.5 million trees and building 2,300 infiltration wells. The company is also implementing sustainable agriculture spanning 407 hectares and safeguarding biodiversity in 20 locations. It also held 4 multi-stakeholder forums on watersheds.

Danone Indonesia has set up a solar power plant in a number of its factories which are capable of slashing 7,000 tons of CO2 emission. As well as biomass boilers that can cut 8,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year. Arif said these renewable energy initiatives are equivalent to planting 225,000 trees.

A study by economic think-tank LPEM FEB UI reported that AQUA’s #BijakBerplastik (‘Plastic Wise’) campaign boosted the recycling rate by 17 percent while slashing the amount of waste that remains in the landfills by 14 percent.

The campaign helped reduce plastic waste that ended up in the sea. According to the study, #BijakBerplastik is estimated to also reduce the volume of waste burned, thus preventing the emission of 36,369 tons of carbon dioxide. Danone Indonesia is also encouraging the younger generation to care for the planet through the "Sampahku Tanggung Jawabku" ('My Waste, My Responsibility') for kids.

"We are committed to developing our employees and community both internally and externally," Arif said.

HR ASIA recently named Danone Indonesia as The Best Place to Work in Asia for the third time. Danone-AQUA is also the largest company in Asia and the first FMCG in Indonesia to obtain the B-Corp certification in 2018. The company has also been recertified in 2021.
