SPH Student to Represent Indonesia at World Schools Debating Championships

JULY 14, 2021

Jakarta. Katiana Indrasasana, a twelfth-grader at the Sekolah Pelita Harapan (SPH) Lippo Village, Tangerang, will represent Indonesia at the World Schools Debating Championships (WSDC) 2021 on July 25.

Katiana will represent the national team with four other students. She also acts as the team captain.

Katiana was still in grade 11 when she became a grand finalist at the National Schools Debating Championships (NSDC) 2020. Fifteen best speakers at NSDC then took part at the WSDC selection camp. The camp would select the members of the “dream team” which Katiana would later be a part of.

“It is an honor to represent Indonesia not only as a team member, but as the team captain at a global event. I look forward to bringing honor to Indonesia,” Katiana said.

“I also would like to thank my families, friends, teachers, and coach who have supported me. I could not have come this far without their support,” she said.

As the championship is just around the corner, Katiana practices three to four times a day with WSDC alumni. She continues to hone her skills by practicing three to seven times a week. She researches on various topics and tries to stay up-to-date with the current events.

The twelfth-grader has made numerous stellar achievements in the past. She had won numerous debate competitions starting from Young Thinkers Trophy to the KOMPeK e-Debate Competition held by the Faculty of Economics of University of Indonesia.

Not only is she a good debater, Katiana also excels in both academics and non-academics. For three consecutive years, she has won awards at the SPH Academic Awards, even bringing home the highest achievement award. She is active in football and part of a string ensemble.

The young social activist also composes poetry on adolescent mental health. Katiana also formed Sampah Sehat, a non-profit organization which focuses on combating environmental issues and providing social-health assistance for those in need.

Katiana’s story is hoped to inspire Indonesia's younger generations.
