Jakarta. Choirul Huda, number one goalie of Persela Lamongan, has died at 38, after a collision with his teammate during a top-tier Liga 1 match against Semen Padang at Surajaya Stadium in Lamongan, East Java, on Sunday (15/10).
In the 45th minute, Choirul collided with center-back Ramon Rodrigues and lost consciousness. Panic was recorded in a footage, which shows he was given oxygen before the ambulance arrived.
He died at a hospital when Persela won the match 2-0.
In his 18-year professional career, Choirul played only for his favorite Persela. In a tribute to its tragically lost captain, the club has decided to retire his No. 1 jersey.
"His dedication and loyalty can't be doubted. He's one of the best talents Lamongan has ever had," Persela team manager Yunan Achmadi said on the club's website.
The incident has shaken the football world. FIFA delivered condolences to Choirul's family and teammates.
Our sincere condolences to the family, friends and team-mates of Choirul Huda.https://t.co/7vEBFerq07— #FIFAU17WC
