Jokowi Demands Transparent, Accountable Use of Funds in Preparation for 2018 Asian Games
Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo urged the steering committee for the 2018 Asian Games and other government agencies to maintain transparency in allocating funds in preparation for the event.
The Asian Games, which will be hosted in Jakarta and Palembang, South Sumatra, are partially funded by allocations in the 2017 State Budget, amounting to nearly Rp 4.5 trillion ($338 million).
Jokowi said preparations for the sporting event must be done in a transparent, accountable and efficient manner.
"The budget [for the Asian Games] must be correctly calculated [...] I warn you not to mark it up," the president said at a meeting with event organizers at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday (07/06).
"I want the process to be transparent, open and accountable."
Vice President Jusuf Kalla, who was previously named head of the Asian Game's steering committee, was also at the meeting.
Jokowi also urged Kalla and others to speed up their efforts in preparing for the 2018 event.
"This will be our first Asian Games and could help put Indonesia on the map."
