Jakarta. Olympic swimming gold medalist Joseph Schooling will support fellow Singaporean Angela Lee in her ONE Championship bout in May.

The 21-year-old swimmer, who beat world number one Michael Phelps in the 100-meter butterfly event in August last year, is keen to be on the talented female mixed martial arts fighter's side when she defends her title.

Lee, who is the ONE women's atomweight world champion, will fight Istela Nunes of Brazil at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on May 26.

"I am very happy to be including Olympic gold medalist Joseph Schooling in my walkout as I defend my world title for the second time; this time right here in Singapore," Lee said in a statement on Tuesday (28/03).

"I can't wait to hear the roar of the crowd as their two world champions walk out to the cage, one holding the ONE Championship belt and the other with the Singapore national flag," she added.

Lee won her championship belt in May last year, after defeating Mei Yamaguchi of Japan.

The 20-year-old prodigy then defended her title by defeating Jenny Huang of Taiwan with a technical knockout in Bangkok in early March.

Schooling, who is still studying at a university in the United States, will fly home specially to support Lee.

"I definitely do not want to miss the chance to walk alongside Angela Lee as she defends her title against Istela Nunes. It will definitely be spectacular," Schooling said.

ONE Championship is a Singapore-based mixed martial arts competition launched on July 14, 2011.
