Apple Tests AI Software for Smarter Siri on iPhone 16

California. Apple is rolling out a software update aimed at enhancing Siri with artificial intelligence, designed to automate a range of tasks on the new iPhone 16 models set to launch on Friday.
The free update, available to select testers starting Thursday, will be released to all iPhone users next month. Currently, only last year's premium models feature the advanced processor necessary for AI functions. However, with the arrival of the iPhone 16, all new models—priced from $800 to $1,200—will support the new technology branded as "Apple Intelligence," distinguishing it from AI offerings in devices by Samsung and Google.
The AI capabilities are highlighted as a key selling point for the iPhone 16, and releasing the test version now may encourage consumers to purchase the new models sooner. Initially, the AI features will be available in US English, with plans for localization in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK by December, followed by other languages and regions in 2025.

The software update follows the recent launch of iOS 18 for earlier iPhone models. Once users install the iOS 18.1 upgrade, Siri is expected to be more conversational and versatile, responding with a glowing light that rotates around the screen. While Apple promises enhanced functionality and reduced confusion, Siri will not yet be able to interact with other installed apps until a future update.
Additional AI features include tools for writing and proofreading, summarizing emails and documents, and providing editing options for photos. However, initial updates will not include more advanced functions, such as creating customized emojis or generating images on request. Apple also plans to integrate OpenAI's ChatGPT to assist with user queries.
The new AI features will also be compatible with last year's iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which have the required chip. This update will also enable spatial video recording on those models for viewing on Apple's $3,500 Vision Pro headset.
Unfortunately, the AI functionalities will not be accessible on the hundreds of millions of older iPhones still in circulation, which may impact Apple's sales momentum. This expectation has led to a 15 percent increase in Apple’s stock price since the company unveiled its AI strategy in June, contributing to a $500 billion rise in shareholder value. Analysts predict that heightened demand for new iPhones could push Apple’s market value above $4 trillion within the next year.
