Jakarta. Car distributor Chery Sales Indonesia (CSI) is on track to wrap up inspections of Omoda 5 vehicles suspected of rear axle production defects by mid-June 2024.

Rifki Setiawan, Head of Brand at Chery Sales Indonesia (CSI), stated, "We're aiming to finish by mid-June. Progress is at 90 percent. The challenge is finding a schedule for consumers to come to the dealer, which takes time," he said in Jakarta on Friday.

CSI initiated a recall of 420 units of Chery Omoda 5 on May 13 due to the discovery of potential rear axle component breakage in numerous units. This recall only applies to 420 units of Omoda 5 1.5 T (Z and RZ), with CSI confirming that it does not impact other Chery products.

Throughout the inspection process, Rifki confirmed that the components in the Omoda 5 vehicles bear similarities to those in Malaysia. This similarity arose from an upgrade to the welding system during production, leading to an error.

"We issued an official statement yesterday following an assessment by headquarters, revealing that the issue lies with the vendor. During the production phase, there was an upgrade to the welding system, which resulted in a slight issue at the vendor," he explained.

Previously, owners of Omoda 5 vehicles in Malaysia encountered incidents of rear part damage while driving, prompting Chery to recall 600 units of Chery Omoda 5 in Malaysia.

Chery identified that the rear axles were already worn out, tracing the issue back to one of the suppliers. Despite recalling all Omoda 5 cars produced between August 14 and August 17, 2023, in Malaysia, Chery suspects that only around 60 units may have issues in that country.
