Semarang. Indonesia's state railway company KAI will introduce a new CCTV system with face recognition technology to prevent misconduct at train stations.

"We're developing an analytics system similar to the one used by KAI Commuter to address issues like sexual harassment and pickpocketing," said Anne Purba, KAI's Vice President of Public Relations, in Semarang, Central Java, on Friday.

Anne explained that this system will help identify and blacklist passengers involved in criminal activities. "With this CCTV system, we can quickly spot individuals who have committed crimes at stations and take immediate action," she said.

The system will allow KAI to monitor and track the location of offenders within the station. "We’ll be able to pinpoint their exact location as a precaution," she added.

However, Anne stressed that the system alone won’t solve all problems without help from passengers. She encouraged passengers to report any suspicious activity or incidents at the station and on the train.

"We need passengers to report incidents and keep an eye on their belongings to ensure a safer journey," she said.

Anne also mentioned that CCTV has already been installed on KAI Commuter Lines and is being upgraded with face recognition technology for faster responses to incidents. "We've been using this system since 2020, but further investment is needed to fully develop it," she explained.

For long-distance trains, Anne confirmed that CCTV has already been installed on board.

KAI has already implemented face recognition services at several stations, including Gambir Station in Central Jakarta, where the Face Recognition Boarding service has been available since Sept. 1, 2023. However, this service primarily aims to streamline the boarding process for long-distance train passengers, who must first register to use it.
