Ruangguru Offers Free Live Classes During School Shutdown
Jakarta. Online education app Ruangguru is offering free online courses for students and teachers who have been told to stay at home during the Covid-19 outbreak in Indonesia.
Schools in Jakarta are closed for two weeks since Monday to minimize the spread of Covid-19. The same policy is also in effect in West Java, East Java, Lampung, Aceh, Southeast Sulawesi, South Sumatra and West Kalimantan.
Ruangguru's free online courses feature live classes with Ruangguru Master Teachers. The classes are scheduled just like regular school – Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. There are 15 channels available offering all school subjects at all levels – from first to twelfth grade.
"Students should not have their learning activities interrupted just because schools are closed," Ruangguru founder and director Belva Devara said in Jakarta on Monday.
Aside from joining the live classes, students can also practice their exams on the Questions Bank and Online Tryout channels.
"This morning, hundreds of thousands of students were livestreaming classes on Ruangguru. This has never happened before," Belva said.
He said the Ruangguru server could handle up to 4 million users simultaneously, and the site has made preparations for a traffic surge in the next two weeks while schools remain on lockdown.
Teachers can also practice their skills on the Online Teachers Training channel, which will be available free for a month from March 16.
The channel has 250 videos and teaching modules on class management, learning plan, project-based learning implementation and more.
Ruangguru has collaborated with mobile operator Telkomsel to offer a special internet deal for Ruangguru. Users can pay Rp 50,000 ($3.3) to get a one-month bundling package with 30 gigabytes of internet using the discount code TETAPSEHAT.
