Jakarta Great Online Sale Starts Today
Jakarta. Various special offers and discounts of up to 95 percent will be available at participating online stores and marketplaces during the Jakarta Great Online Sale between Thursday (15/06) and June 22.
The Jakarta Great Online Sale was initiated in 2013 by online fashion retailer Berrybenka.com and Orami.co.id, a seller of baby products.
"We saw tremendous growth in local online businesses and wanted to provide a special platform for them," Berrybenka.com chief executive Jason Lamuda said during a press conference at City Hall in Central Jakarta on Wednesday. "Therefore, in 2013, we presented the first Jakarta Great Online Sale to coincide with Jakarta's anniversary."
Eleven online stores participated in the first Jakarta Great Online Sale in 2013.
"We've received very positive feedback from our partners since the first year," said Ferry Tenka, chief executive of Orami.co.id. "Many of them reported a two- to sevenfold increase in online traffic and transactions during the event."
This year, 150 online stores are participating in the online sale, offering a range of products, including food, fashion, gadgets, jewelry, home appliances, travel tickets and vouchers.
In contrast with previous years, when the event took place over three days, this year's online sale will last a week.
"This year's event coincides with the holy month," Jason said. "Therefore, we hope the extended period [of the online sale] will give people more time and opportunity to shop in preparation of Lebaran [Idul Fitri]."
The Jakarta provincial government supports the event.
"I'd encourage everyone to make use of the special offers and discounts during the Jakarta Great Online Sale to buy what they need for Lebaran," said Irwandi, head of the Jakarta provincial government's cooperatives and small and medium enterprises division. "It will help increase the sales of local SMEs and boost Jakarta's economic growth."
Jakarta's economic growth slowed to 5.85 percent last year from 5.88 percent in 2015.
The online sale is also supported by the Ministry of Trade.
"The event is a great platform to grow local e-commerce," said Iriani Pramudyaningsih, head of the institutional and business development subdivision at the Trade Ministry. "It helps promote the products of local SMEs that are sold online, as well as the comfort and safety of online shopping."
Iriani said the value of e-commerce transactions Indonesia doubled to Rp 319.8 trillion ($24 billion) in 2016 from the year before.
"We're very optimistic that e-commerce will become one of the engines that drive Indonesia's economy in the future," she said.
