Attackers Used Pressure-Cooker Bombs in East Jakarta Blasts
Jakarta. The twin explosions at a TransJakarta bus station in Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta, which killed five and injured 10 others on Wednesday night (24/05), were reportedly caused by homemade bombs, police have said.
Officers found a receipt for the purchase of pressure cookers in a pocket of one of the two suicide bombers, National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Setyo Wasisto said on Thursday morning.
"In a preliminary examination at the scene, we found the receipt in a pocket of one of the perpetrators, dated May 22, about 9 a.m., from a minimarket in Padalarang [West Java]," said Setyo.
The scatter of explosives at the scene also indicates the attackers had used pressure-cooker bombs.
"From the remaining parts, it looks like pressure-cooker bombs, similar to the one we found in Bandung [West Java]," Setyo added.
He said that although further investigation is needed to disclose more details of the attack, it can be confirmed that it was "a two-man suicide show with two blasts in overlapping time and location."
The bodies of the perpetrators were destroyed by the explosions, but it is assumed that both were men. Their identities need to be established before the police make any claims regarding their affiliation with terrorist organizations.
Five police officers and five civilians injured in the attack are treated at nearby Premier Hospital and Hermina Hospital in Jatinegara and the police hospital in Kramat Jati.
