Jakarta. Police fatally shot four unidentified assailants crashed a minivan through the front gate of Riau Police headquarters in Pekanbaru on Wednesday (16/05) morning. One police officer was killed in the attack.
"A minivan broke into an entrance gate of Riau Police headquarters […] four individuals [got out of the car and] attacked officers using long swords," National Police spokesman Gen. Setyo Wasito said at a press conference in Jakarta.
After four assailants disembarked from the minivan to engage police in the compound, the driver backed up and exited the headquarters, eventually hitting one police officer and two journalists who were on the scene. The officer was killed immediately, according to police.
The driver managed to flee the scene and escape on foot into nearby residential buildings, though police say they have captured one assailant alive. There are currently no details available if more assailants managed to escape from the van.
"We are now checking the minivan and the body of the assailants,” said Riau Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Sunarto, adding that some of the attackers wore vests.
A police bomb squad team has been deployed to the scene.
The attack took place around 9 a.m., when officers were preparing to hold a press conference about an earlier drug raid in the city.
Setyo said one of the assailants was captured and taken to the Pekanbaru Police station for interrogation.
Separately, Sunarto said police are still searching for more attackers.
The latest incident comes after an attack on the Surabaya Police headquarters in East Java on Monday morning and three church bombings in the city on Sunday. A bomb also accidentally exploded inside an apartment block in nearby Sidoarjo on Sunday. Several people died and scores were injured in the incidents.
The National Police's elite antiterrorism squad, Detachment 88, has captured several suspected terrorists in East Java, North Sumatra and South Sumatra following the incidents in Surabaya and Sidoarjo.
