Stay Calm and Vigilant: President Says After Suicide Bomb Attack in Solo
Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said the public must remain calm but vigilant after a suicide bomb attack hit a police station in Solo, Central Java, on Tuesday morning (05/07).
A police officer was injured after a man detonated a low-explosive bomb strapped to his own body after he was stopped from entering the police station at 7.30 a.m. The attacker was killed instantly.
“The police already have the situation under control. People should stay calm but vigilant as we celebrate Idul Fitri tomorrow,” the president told reporters in Padang, West Sumatra.
“I have instructed the National Police chief to pursue the terrorist cells responsible for the attack,” the President said.
Jokowi said he will keep his original schedule to visit Solo — his hometown — tomorrow.
Solo Mayor F.X. Hadi Rudyatmo assured public the security situation in Solo remains under control. No major changes to Wednesday's Idul Fitri celebrations has been announced.
“People must stay calm, there's no need to worry. The takbir celebrations tonight and the Ied prayers tomorrow morning will be held as scheduled with heightened security,” Hadi said at the scene of the bomb attack, as broadcast on Kompas TV.
The police will make a statement after they finish examining the crime scene.
Reports circulating among security personnel said the alleged suicide bomber was 31-year-old Nur Rohman from Pasar Kliwon in Solo.
Nur was a member of Laskar Hizbah, a radical group that has pledged loyalty to the Islamic State. Nur's group is connected to another terror group in Bekasi, West Java, which the police rounded up last year.
