Palembang's Iconic Ampera Bridge Featured in Popular Online Video Game
Jakarta. South Korean game developer Zepetto has featured the iconic Ampera Bridge in Palembang, South Sumatra, as one of its locations in its popular video game, Point Blank.
A fast-paced online first-person shooter, Point Blank is often compared to Valve's timeless Counter Strike game, which officially debuted in 2000. Zepetto's game, however, is the highest-grossing squad tactical shooter in South Korea, Thailand, Russia and Indonesia.
"We are proud [...] only a few global tourist attractions are featured in Point Blank," South Sumatra Tourism Agency head Irene Camelyn Sinaga said in a statement on Sunday (14/05).
The Ampera Bridge, which stretches 224 meters in length, became available for play for Point Blank users in a software patch on March 21.
Construction on the bridge first begun in 1962 under Indonesia's first president, Soekarno, who wanted to rival the awe-inspiring beauty of London's landmark Tower Bridge.
Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said the landmark's recent addition in Point Blank might help draw foreign tourists to Indonesia, if not Palembang itself.
"We hope that the game will maintain its international popularity and urge players to visit Palembang and the Ampera Bridge," Arief said, adding that Point Blank can help the Tourism Ministry promote the Wonderful Indonesia tourism campaign to new audiences.
