Jakarta. The top 10 finalists in this year's Nusantara Fish Cooking Competition prepared their dishes for President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo at the State Palace in Central Jakarta on Tuesday (15/08).
The president, first lady Iriana Joko Widodo, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti, Health Minister Nila Moeloek and Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi attended the event, organized by the State Secretariat, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Tourism, Presidential Staff Office, the Femina Group and masaktv.
The aim of the event is to promote greater fish consumption by Indonesians, while also creating new dishes for culinary tourism.
"Our oceans are huge and produce abundant marine resources, including fish, which has a very high nutritional value – required by families and children. It is therefore necessary to significantly increase our consumption of fish," President Jokowi said.
Minister Susi said that besides making the nation healthier through the Healthy Society Movement (Germas) and the Fish Eating Movement (Gemarikan), fish can also be processed into various foods that will benefit tourism.
"The more famous our cuisine is, the more it will be remembered by tourists," Susi said.
Before the competition, finalists had to attend workshops on topics such as safety checks on the president's food, preparation procedures, professional kitchen techniques and hygiene.
The final jury was headed by chef Vindex Tengker, vice president of in-flight services at Garuda Indonesia, the national airline.
The three winners are Abdul Kadir of Pontianak, West Kalimantan, with his dish botok ikan masak putih, Ruben Jeremia of Jakarta with gabus pucung sambal pete and Narti Buo of Gorontalo with ikan santan goroho.
