Jakarta. Raja Ampat in West Papua is currently hosting Raja Ampat Marine Festival from Oct. 18 until 21 to showcase the marine potential in the region.
The main festival of the event is aquathlon, a race consists of swimming and running.
The event will also feature beach volleyball competition, environmental workshop, cooking competition and exhibitions of traditional boats.
“We aim to introduce the marine beauty and cultural wonders of the people who live around Raja Ampat,” Raja Ampat district head Abdul Faris said in a statement on Thursday (19/10).
Yusdhi Lamatenggo, head of Raja Ampat Tourism Agency, the region plans to host more sport competitions in the future, such as canoeing and cliff diving.
“We have partnered with a consultant from Jakarta to host sport competitions in Raja Ampat,” Yusdhi said.
Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said the move to make tourism as a leading sector in the region is correct as it will directly benefit the local economy.
