Jakarta. Riau is wants to attract tourists by promoting Pasar Bawah, the oldest market in the province's capital of Pekanbaru that sells a wide range of antique items.
The market, recognized as a "must-visit location" for travelers is one of the nominees in the Indonesian Attraction Awards set to be held by the Ministry of Tourism in November.
"I feel the need to introduce Pasar Bawah as a tourism attraction," Riau Governor Arsyadjuliandi Rachman said in Pekanbaru recently.
Pasar Bawah, or Lower Market, is adjacent to the Siak River. It sells local products such as Riau-style woven fabrics, food (including lempuk durian, dodol kedondong, smoked fish and salted fish).
The market also sells second-hand electronics and a wide range of other overseas products, including ceramics from China, carpets from the Middle East and bags from Italy.
