Street Floats Make Centerpiece in Riau Islands Carnival
Jakarta. Riau Islands will hold its annual Kepri Carnival in Tanjung Pinang on Oct. 21. The event is held each year to promote art and culture from the region.
The carnival will feature a float parade featuring Mendu Natuna from Natuna, Gobang from Anambas, Mak Yong Art from Batam and Bintan and Dangkong dance from Lingga and Karimun.
A total of 70 floats will compete to win an award for the best design.
"The parade's participants will be clad in colorful costumes just like in Jember Fashion Carnival, Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival, Solo Batik Carnaval or Malang Flower Carnival," Riau Islands Tourism Agency head Buralimar said in a statement on Friday (20/10).
Tourism Ministry's tourism development deputy Esthy Astuti praised the event, saying it is an effective way to attract tourists and boost the local economy.
The carnival alone according to her already meets the ministry’s "4E requirements" — Education, Entertainment, Exhibition and Economic Benefit.
