Contraflow System in Place on Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road Ahead of Long Weekend
Jakarta. State-controlled toll operator Jasa Marga has implemented a temporary contraflow system on part of the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road to reduce traffic congestion at the start of the long weekend, a company spokesman said on Friday afternoon (09/12).
Dwimawan Heru Santoso, assistant vice president for corporate communication at Jasa Marga, was quoted by Antara news agency as saying that the contraflow system will allow motorists heading east towards Cikampek to use some lanes over a 7-kilometer stretch of the westbound carriageway of Indonesia's busiest toll road.
The three-day weekend is the result of Monday's national holiday, as Indonesia commemorates the birthday of the Prophet Muhammed.
Jakartans typically travel out of town to nearby cities over long weekends, usually resulting in heavy traffic congestion on outbound roads.
Dwimawan said the contraflow system has been in place since around 1.00 p.m. on Friday from the 14-kilometer mark to the 21-kilometer mark on the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road.
Members of the Jakarta Police, assisted by Jasa Marga field officers, are regulating traffic.
Dwimawan said the Cawang-East Bekasi section has seen a 29 percent increase in traffic volumes, but that the situation at the Cikarang main toll gate was still normal by Friday afternoon.
He did not say for how long the contraflow system would be in place.
