Kalstar Aviation Flight Skids Off Kupang Runway; No Injuries Reported
Jakarta. No injuries were reported after a plane with 125 people on board skidded off the runway at an airport in eastern Indonesia on Monday evening, in the latest such incident in the country’s aviation industry.
The Kalstar Aviation jet, a Brazil-made Embraer ERJ 195-200, slipped on the runway at El Tari Airport in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, while landing during heavy rain, according to Transportation Ministry spokesman J.A. Barata.
“All passengers and flight crew made it out of the plane in good condition,” he added as quoted by Antara.
The flight originated in East Nusa Tenggara’s Ende district.
The incident is the second in as many months involving a botched landing. On Nov. 6, a Batik Air Boeing 737 skidded off the runway of Yogyakarta’s Adisucipto Airport with 167 people on board.
It was also raining at the time, and there were no injuries reported.
Air travel is a growing industry in Indonesia, where many towns and districts are only accessible by plane, but poor safety standards, underequipped airports and scant regulatory oversight have contributed to high rates of aviation accidents.
