Ministry to Allow Auto Shops to Perform Roadworthiness Tests
Jakarta. The Transportation Ministry plans to allow auto shops to perform roadworthiness tests at the request of the Jakarta administration, as more and more drivers register their cars to obtain a roadworthiness certificate required to operate legally under a ride-hailing platform, including Uber and GrabCar, an official said on Tuesday (09/08).
The queue to get the certificate has been getting longer as the deadline for the new regulation to come into effect nears on Oct. 1. By that time, all ride-hailing service drivers have to carry a roadworthiness certificate.
The new rule is part of a series of new regulations issued to regulate the ever-popular app-based ride-hailing services, which were previously not regulated under the Transportation Law.
"We intend to issue a regulation allowing auto shops to perform the roadworthiness test by the end of this year," the head of people’s land transportation sub-directorate at the Transportation Ministry, Ahmad Yani, said in Jakarta.
According to Ahmad, the already drafted regulation will require auto shops to obtain accreditation from the ministry to conduct the roadworthiness test.
Jakarta Transportation Agency head Andri Yansah said 15 auto shops in the capital have declared themselves ready to perform the roadworthiness test.
"We’ve asked for the regulation since December last year. Our partners are ready now, we'll just have to wait for the regulation," Andri said.
The Jakarta administration currently only has three workshops capable of performing the test, one each in Unjung Menteng and Pulo Gadung in East Jakarta, and another one in Cilincing, North Jakarta.
