Ship Catches Fire in Java Sea, All Passengers Survive
Jakarta. A passenger ship carrying 119 people en route to Pontianak, West Kalimantan, from Semarang in Central Java caught fire at sea on Sunday (29/10). All its passengers and crew survived the fire, the Transport Ministry said.
KM Dharma Kencana II departed from Tanjung Emas Port in Semarang on Saturday and caught fire early Sunday morning 47 nautical miles northeast of Karimunjawa Islands on the Java Sea, Acting Director General of Sea Transport at Transport Ministry Bay Hasani said in a ministry statement.
"The ship reported the fire to the Tanjung Emas Port and immediately a coastguard patrol boat was dispatched to help," Bay said.
The captain of the ship was Bambang Tri.
"I want to appreciate the help given by KM Kirana I ship that was en route to Kumai [in Central Kalimantan]," coastguard director Marwansyah said.
All passengers and crew of the ship were evacuated to the Kumai Port, he said.
A total of nine ships were deployed in the rescue operation.
