Indonesia entered its 76th years of independence on August 17, 2021.
To honor the independence day, children who live at Jalan Belah Kapal, Cilincing in North Jakarta, held a simple flag-raising ceremony on Tuesday. Despite its simplicity, the children were fired up to show their love for the country.
The children dressed in red-and-white to reflect the colors of the Indonesian flag. They even had already gathered in the large field at the end of Jalan Belah Kapal since 6 a.m. Under the scorching morning sun and the typical ocean fragrance, they held a brief rehearsal before finally starting the ceremony.
It was Kelas Jurnalis Cilik —a community offering journalism courses to children living in Jakarta's coastlines— who came up with the idea for a "mini" flag ceremony. The community's founder Syamsudin Ilyas even took the role of leading the event. The ceremony might have lacked a complete choir or the sophisticated national flag-hoisting troop. Even so, it took place solemnly and happily.
