Jakarta. The intensive care units for Covid-19 patients at Cengkareng Hospital, West Jakarta and Bekasi City Hospital, West Java, two of major hospitals designated for pandemic treatment in the Greater Jakarta, has been operating at a full capacity on Thursday, reflecting the capital's health system that was on the brink of collapse in dealing with the latest Covid-19 surge.
On Thursday, Cengkareng Hospital treated 354 Covid-19 patients, with only 290 patients treated in isolation ICU wards. The other 30 patients had to wait in transition rooms, while the rest were being treated in a makeshift ICU set up outside the hospital.
A similar situation was also seen at the Bekasi City Hospital. The hospital set up a makeshift ICU in front of the emergency room with a capacity of 30 beds. Patients wait in a queue that kept getting longer by the hour. Several health workers in protective gear tried their best to keep up with the flood of patients in the makeshift ICU with minimum facilities.
