Earned Silver, Won Hearts

AUGUST 23, 2018

Jakarta. Indonesia won a silver medal in the men's team badminton event at the Istora Senayan Stadium in Jakarta on Wednesday (22/08), its first in 20 years, after grueling and dramatic matches against China during this year's Asian Games.

The team event, which results are decided based on the best five matches, opened with a game between Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and Shi Yuqi. Anthony showed determination despite a leg cramp. He lost, but earned his opponent's respect and outpouring sympathy of Indonesian supporters.

Indonesia men's doubles champions, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, comfortably gained a straight-set win over Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen.
However, Cina's Chen Long won 19-21, 21-16, 21-18 with Jonatan Christie.
Another men's double, Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto, challenged world champions Zhang Nan and Liu Cheng, but lost 18-21 in the rubber set.
Indonesia lost by 3-1 to China, but it did not stop its home supporters, among whom was President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, from cheering and shouting the athletes' names.
With this result, Indonesia is now fifth in the games' medal count, with six golds, four silvers and seven bronzes.
