About 300 people gathered at the Arjuna Wiwaha Statue in Central Jakarta on Tuesday to demand that the government establish a national commission for people with disabilities and remove physical health as requirement for employment in the public service.
The action came in response to a recent case involving Romi Syofpa Ismael, a dentist from South Solok in West Sumatra, who was disqualified from working for the local government because she uses a wheelchair.
The participants, who wore traditional attire from the various parts of Indonesia, also held a march to disprove the common belief that people with disabilities are unhealthy.
The event was organized by the National Coalition Working Group on Implementing the Law on Persons With Disabilities.
