Families of victims of the May 1998 Jakarta riots commemorated the tragedy on Monday by scattering flowers for the dead at one of the many shopping centers that were looted and then burned with many people still inside during the three-day conflagration on May 13-15, 1998. The annual ritual at Klender Mall in East Jakarta is part of the Refuse to Forget (Menolak Lupa) campaign to push the Indonesian government to continue investigating unsolved cases of human rights violations. The families of the May 1998 riot victims have also been demanding that the goverment should not give perpetrators of human rights crimes a position in its administration.
