Jakarta. Environmental activists have staged a demonstration at the Arjuna Wijaya Statue area in Central Jakarta on June 4, demanding President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to issue policies to save the environment and people from the impact of the climate crisis.

The protest started at 01.00 p.m local time, simultaneously with others protests in several cities around the country, including Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Makassar, Sukabumi, Bali, Samarinda, Serang, and Bekasi. The activists staged the demonstration as part of the World Environment Day annual commemoration, which falls on June 5.

The protesters accused Jokowi of never paying attention to environmental sustainability, instead only considering economic and investment aspects in many of his decisions. This resulted in the emergence of extreme hydrometeorological disasters.

Carrying bells and noisy instruments, environmental activists ring the 'danger alarm' as a symbolic statement that Indonesia is currently in a 'climate emergency' where government policies enable exploitation of nature, forests, and the ocean in a massive, systematic, and structured manner.
