Long Way to Normal: Ciliwung River

NOVEMBER 30, -0001

Jakarta's great Ciliwung River seen from the air near Gedong in Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta, on Thursday (02/07/2019). The city administration will continue its "Ciliwung normalization" project, demolishing makeshift houses on the bank of the river – which used to be a major transportation route in tempo doeloe days – to improve waterflow and prevent flood. The project was held back last year by disputes over land acquisition, as kampung residents near the river fought repeated attempts of forced relocation. (Antara Photo/Hafidz Mubarak A.)
