Jakarta. Gunawan is not an ordinary member of the Jakarta cleaning service team, known as the “orange troop”. He was born with an enormous painting talent. The 49-year-old man demonstrated that he is also a skillful graffiti artist by producing a beautiful mural on a wall along the Tebet flyover in South Jakarta on Aug.15.

"As an orange troop member, I use to clean the neighborhood in Bukit Duri area on a daily basis. But I also quite often draw the faces of Indonesian national heroes during my day off," he said.

Gunawan always has a major preparation to commemorate Independence Day every year.

“I pitch an idea to my supervisor that I want to draw a mural to celebrate the nation's cultural diversity," he said.

He thought that Indonesian cultural diversity is the ultimate power to build the nation’s bright future. He said that Indonesians have the same condition and principle as the mural he has been painting on the wall.

"The walls are narrow, the space is limited but it must be filled with images of various shapes, lines, colors that tell a lot of stories. When all those elements come together, it can be a very beautiful mural on this wall. Just like our nation spirit," he said.
