No Mining, No Cry
Greenpeace Indonesia and a group of other non-governmental organizations sealed the gate of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry headquarters in Central Jakarta with a giant padlock on National Anti-Mining Day on Tuesday. The commemoration was inspired by the Lapindo mudflow disaster in Sidoarjo, East Java, which started 13 years ago. A total of 640 hectares and more than 10,000 homes in ten villages are now submerged in hot mud blowing out from the failed drilling of a natural gas well by miner Lapindo Brantas. More than 22,000 residents have been evacuated from their homes. The mudflow is expected to continue for the next 25 to 30 years. (JG Photo/Yudha Baskoro)
