The Plight of the Sumatran Elephant
According to the Indonesian Elephant Conservation Forum, the Sumatran elephant population has decreased by 70 percent in the past two decades, due to poaching, conflicts with local farmers and a shrinking natural habitat. In Indonesia, there are now less than 2,000 of them. The Elephant Conservation Center (PKG) in Minas, Riau, is a small retreat trying to help the endangered animals survive. Many of them were rescued from ivory hunters and circuses.
