A massive flash flood hit Konawe in Southeast Sulawesi on Saturday. According to the National Disaster Management Agency, more than 5,000 people had to be evacuated from their homes, some by helicopters.

A state of emergency has been declared from June 2 to June 16.

The flash flood also caused heavy damage to rice fields and fish farms in the area.

Rescue teams have been hampered by lack of equipment, difficult terrain and constant overflow from the Konaweha River.

Authorities said three bridges, five mosques, two community health centers, five elementary schools, three junior high schools and three markets were seriously damaged by the flood.
