Thousands of workers from various local labor unions took part in the May Day rally in Central Jakarta on Wednesday.

The workers, most of whom work in factories on the outskirts of Greater Jakarta, assembled at the National Monument before trying to make their way to the nearby State Palace at around 9.30 a.m.

Road blocks and around 25,000 police officers stopped the workers from getting close to the palace.

In the end, the workers shouted their demands for better working conditions, more jobs, higher wages and an end to outsourcing under a pedestrian bridge after failing to jump over a barbed-wire fence barrier.
