Jakarta. The progress of the Coastal Protection project aimed at safeguarding the shores of Jakarta Bay from tidal flooding has reached 53.14 percent and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

"This National Strategic Project (PSN) involves the reinforcement and elevation of sea dikes, river mouth dikes, and coastal area arrangements along the northern coast of Jakarta and its surrounding areas, with the current progress reaching 53.14 percent," said Executive Vice President (EVP) of state-owned construction company Hutama Karya Corporate Secretary Adjib Al Hakim in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Adjib said the project is constructed to protect the surrounding areas from tidal flooding, especially in residential areas when sea levels rise due to land subsidence and rising sea levels.

The Coastal Protection project in the Jakarta Bay Coast Phase 6 Package 4, located in the Penjaringan District, North Jakarta, and the Kosambi District, Tangerang Regency, amounts to Rp 297 billion ($18/5 million).

The project began in December 2022 and is targeted to be completed by the end of December 2024.

With a total length of 1,485 meters, the project is divided into three zones and was carried out through cooperation between state-owned companies Wika and Hutama Karya.

In the construction, piles and bamboo mats were designed to withstand the silt and boulder structures. In addition, inner bore technology is also used, where the pile installation process is more environmentally friendly as it does not cause air pollution, noise pollution, and minimal vibration.

Adjib stated that the company is committed to completing this project so that it can later be used to hold back seawater due to tidal waves, reduce economic and social losses due to tidal flooding, and limit land development in coastal areas or area arrangements.

"It is hoped that this project can increase coastal resilience against erosion and strengthen coastal infrastructure for the Jakarta Bay area," he said.
