Jakarta. Rupiah clawed back intraday losses to finish stronger on Friday, defying lingering geopolitical jitters tied to US–Iran tensions and a still-resilient dollar.

The Indonesian currency closed at Rp 17,229 per US dollar on April 24, appreciating 57 points from the previous close of Rp 17,286, after briefly weakening by 10 points earlier in the session. In the morning trade, the rupiah had already edged up 5 points, or 0.03%, to Rp 17,281.

Ibrahim Assuaibi, director at Traze Andalan Futures, said the rupiah’s resilience came despite persistent global uncertainty, particularly from the Middle East.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran remain elevated after reports that Iran’s chief negotiator for peace talks in Pakistan had stepped down. At the same time, US President Donald Trump signaled no urgency in securing a deal with Iran.

Still, the rupiah found support as Washington earlier this week extended its ceasefire with Tehran without a set deadline.

The US dollar, meanwhile, continues to draw safe-haven demand amid uncertainty. It has strengthened since early March 2026 on rising conflict concerns, though it has pared some gains this month as optimism grows over a potential resolution.

Looking ahead, Ibrahim warned the rupiah may struggle to sustain gains.

“For Monday’s trading, the rupiah is expected to remain volatile but close weaker in the range of Rp 17,220 to Rp 17,260,” he said.
