Jakarta. "Jakarta Undercover," a 2007 drama about the down-and-out of life in the Indonesian capital, gets a remake that goes beyond the wild night club scene.

The 2017 remake, which bears the same title, is led by director Fajar Nugros, who said the new version will depict the people's struggle to improve their living standard. Speaking at the launch of the movie's trailer in South Jakarta on Thursday (19/01), Fajar said he aims to explore Jakarta even deeper.

"Jakarta is a place to go to pursue dreams of a better life. There are clashes of interest and no guarantees of success. People will take opportunities so they can survive. This movie will talk about support and betrayal," he said.

Starring Oka Antara, Lukman Sardi, Baim Wong and Tiara Eve, "Jakarta Undercover" digs into the bittersweet life of the megalopolis and its daily social sundries.

Oka plays Pras, a journalist from Jombang, East Java, who comes to Jakarta to pursue his career. His editor in chief, Djarwo (Lukman), forces him to write false articles. Pras then decides to write about the darker side of Jakarta as an outlet for his idealism. He crosses paths with Laura, played by Tiara Eve, a prostitute from Manado, North Sulawesi, who is also the breadwinner of her family.

Even though the movie focuses on Jakarta's nightlife, Fajar said he applied self-censorship by not presenting erotic scenes in "Jakarta Undercover."

"Some scenes will be adjusted to the social situation and social perspectives," he said.

"Jakarta Undercover" will open in Indonesian cinemas on Feb. 23.
