Four Million Expected to Remain in Jakarta During Eid Break
Jakarta. Around 4 million residents of Jakarta are expected to remain in the capital during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday, according to the Jakarta Transportation Agency.
Meanwhile, an estimated 6.65 million residents are projected to leave the city during the annual homecoming season known as mudik, when people travel to their hometowns to celebrate Ramadan and Eid with their families.
Yayat Sudrajat, head of traffic and road transport operations control at the agency, said the figures point to potential congestion at several tourist attractions and shopping centers across the capital.
“We estimate around 6,653,749 residents will travel outside Jakarta, while approximately 4,024,251 people will remain in the city,” Yayat said in Jakarta on Thursday.
Those staying in the capital are expected to crowd popular tourist destinations such as Ancol Park in North Jakarta, Ragunan Zoo in South Jakarta, and Taman Mini Indonesia Indah in East Jakarta.
Other locations predicted to attract large numbers of visitors include Jakarta Old Town, the Thousand Islands, the National Monument (Monas) and the Pantai Indah Kapuk district.
Retail and commercial areas are also expected to see increased activity, particularly in major wholesale and shopping districts such as Tanah Abang, Kebon Kacang and Glodok.
To manage the anticipated surge in traffic, city authorities are preparing several measures to reduce congestion. These include contra-flow traffic schemes, odd-even vehicle restrictions, mobility limits in certain tourist areas and coordination among relevant agencies.
The Jakarta Transportation Agency has deployed 2,082 personnel to manage traffic during the 2026 Eid holiday travel period.
Authorities have also prepared supporting equipment, including 90 patrol vehicles, 90 tow trucks, 240 portable traffic signs and 1,350 traffic cones or water barriers.
State-owned toll road operator Jasa Marga predicts the peak of the outbound Eid travel flow will occur on March 18, 2026, or three days before Eid, while the return flow is expected to peak on March 23, three days after the holiday.
The agency estimates that about 3.67 million vehicles will leave Jakarta between 10 days and one day before Eid, while around 3.54 million vehicles are expected to enter the capital between 10 days before and 10 days after the holiday period.
