Jakarta. The Indonesian government plans to write off unpaid BPJS Kesehatan premium debts by the end of 2025, Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment Muhaimin Iskandar said on Tuesday after a cabinet meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace.

“The government will soon carry out a cancellation of BPJS Kesehatan premium debts through a re-registration process,” Muhaimin told reporters, urging participants with arrears to prepare for re-enrollment.

The re-registration process, he said, would be a prerequisite for reactivating the health insurance status of inactive participants. “The re-registration will restore the active membership of participants,” Muhaimin explained.

Under the plan, the state budget will absorb participants’ unpaid dues, effectively transferring the financial burden to the government via BPJS Kesehatan, the country’s universal health insurance scheme.

BPJS Kesehatan President Director Ali Ghufron Mukti previously stressed that the debt relief program will apply only to participants who are economically disadvantaged. Eligible participants must be listed in the government’s official socio-economic database, which records the welfare and financial conditions of all Indonesian citizens.

Last month, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said the government had allocated an additional Rp 20 trillion ($1.2 billion) to support BPJS Kesehatan, with disbursement scheduled for next year.
