Indonesia Completes Evacuation of 926 Nationals from Sudan, Some Remain

Jakarta. Indonesia has successfully evacuated 926 of its citizens from Sudan, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi announced on Friday. The announcement came after she accompanied President Joko Widodo during a meeting with Sudan's Acting Foreign Minister, Hussein Awad Ali Mohammed, at the State Palace in Jakarta.
"926 Indonesian citizens have been evacuated, although around 40 families have chosen to remain in Sudan due to work or family commitments," Retno stated.
During the meeting, President Jokowi expressed his gratitude to the Sudanese authorities for their assistance during the evacuation process amid the country’s ongoing instability.
"The President thanked the Sudanese authorities for their support, noting the challenges posed by the large number of evacuees and the highly unstable situation," Retno added.
She also mentioned that the Indonesian Embassy, previously operating out of Khartoum, has relocated to Port Sudan for security reasons.
"The Sudanese authorities have appreciated that the Indonesian Embassy continues its operations, now from Port Sudan," Retno explained.
Retno highlighted the severe situation in Sudan, where over 4 million people have been displaced due to the conflict. Alongside the violence, Sudan is facing significant health challenges, including outbreaks of monkeypox, dengue fever, malaria, and widespread malnutrition.
In response, Indonesia has sent 22.4 tons of medical aid to Sudan and has nearly completed the evacuation of its citizens from the country.
"Indonesia has provided 22.4 tons of medical aid to Sudan, and we have almost completed the evacuation of our citizens," Retno confirmed.
