Indonesian Business Tycoons Unite to Support National U-23 Team with Rp 23 Billion Donation
Jakarta. Top Indonesian entrepreneurs have launched a crowdfunding campaign to provide financial support to the Indonesian U-23 national team competing in the 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup. A total of 23 entrepreneurs donated Rp 23 billion ($1.4 million) to the Garuda Squad.
The fundraising occurred spontaneously during a celebration and gathering organized by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) China Committee (KIKT) in Jakarta on Sunday.
Politician and businessman Maruarar Sirait led the fundraising campaign, accompanied by KIKT Chairman Garibaldi "Boy" Thohir, Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Chairman Arsjad Rasjid, and Kadin's Vice Chairman III Shinta Kamdani.
"As KIKT members, we must also support what makes us proud. Starting from my group, we're donating Rp 1 billion to the Indonesian national team," said Maruarar during the event.
Several entrepreneurs joined the initiative, including Boy Thohir, Arsjad Rasjid, Shinta Kamdani, Anthony Salim, CEO of Indofood and Salim Group, Djoko Susanto, CEO of Alfamart, Kuncoro Wibowo, CEO of ACE Hardware, and Pieter Tanuri, owner of Bali United.
"Mr. Erick (Indonesian Football Federation Chairman Erick Thohir), please take note, this is a spontaneous collaboration from the KIKT event, just to boost morale. We're proud of Mr. Erick, Mr. Shin Tae-yong (Indonesia's coach), and everyone. Regards to all," said Maruarar.
The Indonesian national team made history by advancing to the semi-finals of the AFC U-23 Asian Cup after defeating South Korea in a penalty shootout.
Indonesia is now one step away from participating in the most prestigious multi-event competition in the world, the 2024 Paris Olympics. To achieve this, Indonesia will face Uzbekistan on Monday (April 29, 2024).
The Indonesian national team can secure an Olympic spot by finishing in the top three of the AFC U-23 Asian Cup or by winning the inter-confederation playoff against Guinea, scheduled for early May.
