Denpasar, Bali. Heavy rainfall across Denpasar and surrounding areas has triggered widespread flooding, leaving parts of the city still inundated on Wednesday, a day after torrential downpours hit the island.

The worst flooding persists in the Bumi Ayu neighborhood of Sanur, where knee-deep water continues to submerge homes and villas despite easing rain. Firefighters from the Denpasar city administration are working around the clock to reduce water levels, deploying nine fire engines to pump floodwater out of the low-lying area.

The prolonged inundation has affected not only local households but also tourist villas occupied by foreign visitors.

Evacuations of both local residents and foreign tourists were still underway on Wednesday, with emergency teams using inflatable boats to reach affected homes. Several residents have been temporarily relocated to nearby community halls, known locally as bale banjar, as authorities try to prevent further risks.

Local resident Jhon said flooding has become a recurring problem in Bumi Ayu due to its basin-like topography.

“Major flooding started yesterday, and water entered our house up to knee height. This happens often when heavy rain continues,” he said. “I hope this doesn’t keep happening.”

Denpasar Fire Department head I Made Tirana said pumping operations would continue without a fixed end date, as the area lacks adequate natural drainage.

“There is no nearby outlet for the water, so we are pumping it toward the mangrove area,” he said. “We have been doing this since yesterday, dividing teams across several flood-hit locations.”

In Bumi Ayu, Tirana added, authorities are combining water pumping with evacuations for residents whose homes remain submerged, while hoping for sustained dry weather to accelerate receding floodwaters.
